SADD's Mission
SADD’s mission is to provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving, and other destructive decisions.
SADD National
For more than a quarter-century, SADD has been recognized as a national leader in alcohol and drug education and prevention. What began as a small-town, grass-roots response to the tragedy of two impaired driving crashes and the resulting death of two teenage students quickly grew to become a nationwide organization fueled by millions of young people across the country.
In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission, and chapters now use the name Students Against Destructive Decisions. Today, SADD highlights prevention of a broad range of behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young people, with special attention to underage drinking, substance abuse, impaired and dangerous driving, and teen violence and suicide.
Indiana SADD
After attending the 2000 SADD National Conference, Jim Noffsinger – a local SADD chapter advisor at the time – returned to Indiana to begin developing what is now Indiana SADD. By 2001, Indiana SADD and the Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute became partners. The Council remains the primary funding source for the program.
Indiana SADD provides support to over 280 middle school, high school, and college chapters, along with dozens of other prevention and community programs. The goal is to provide support for existing chapters and assist in the development of new ones.
"No Use" Policy
SADD does not support or condone the use of alcohol by underage young people. We believe young people can have fun, enjoy life, and nurture positive personal relationships without the distraction and distortion of alcohol. SADD seeks to demonstrate positive and attractive alternatives to alcohol- and other drug-infused activities for teenagers. SADD and its chapters do not support or condone activities that encourage or enable the use of alcohol by underage young people such as safe rides and designated driver programs.
